Dr. Angel Abbud-Madrid is the Director of the Center for Space Resources at the Colorado School of Mines, where he leads a multidisciplinary research program on the human and robotic exploration of space and the utilization of its resources. He has more than 25 years of experience conducting experiments in a variety of NASA’s low-gravity facilities, such as drop towers, parabolic-flight aircraft, the Space Shuttle, and the International Space Station. He is also the President of the Space Resources Roundtable, an international organization focused on bringing the space exploration community, the mining and minerals industries, and the financial and legal sectors to discuss issues related to lunar, asteroidal, and planetary resources. |
Just as our ancestors for centuries relied on the use of local resources to survive and explore every corner of our planet, so the utilization of space resources will spur extraterrestrial exploration by reducing our dependence on materials carried from Earth. The search, extraction, and use of resources from the Moon, asteroids, and other planetary bodies to produce materials, propellants, energy, and basic consumables for life-support may become one of the most important drivers for continuing and further enabling our exploration of space. |
